Get Out Of Debt, Achieve Multiple Financial Goals, Generate High Cashflow.. Only If You Start At The End..

If you are a one person business, you are probably struggling with:

  1. Multiple responsibilities aka Multitasking
You are the principal spokesperson of your business. You are the founder, the brand strategist, the copywriter, the designer, the marketer, the technical executive, and the manager of your day-to-day operations. Juggling between some of these roles you are not experienced with is a huge undertaking.
  2. Time and productivity
With countless hats to wear, how can you know which one to prioritise, and which one to focus your efforts more on to give you the greatest productivity and time? Paying attention to either end of the stick results in the lack of the other. Achieving them all is a dream but you can’t have both at the same time, most of the time.
  3. Financial management
Unless you are already in the finance sector or had been exposed to a broad range of industries including banks, insurance firms, and investment companies, learning how to manage money is a daunting task for most. You don’t even know what is missing when your expenses outgrow your income.

If two out of these three describe you, read on. It might help keep you out of the deadly quicksand.

When you ask any entrepreneurs/solopreneurs out there, they can tell you one of the biggest threats to their business is sustaining it. But they’ll usually default to intertwine multitudinous conditions to a single cause.

To give you an idea, these might sound familiar:

  • how to generate continuous leads for your business
  • why you should network and surround yourself with like-minded people
  • what to focus on between selling and delivering
  • which are the most valuable skills to learn and pursue
  • when should you be taking care of your emotional wellbeing

And so on.

These are important questions that matter in their own ways. Yet, identifying them as the majority of a solopreneur’s challenges, in effect, avoid the challenge of facing the fundamental problem - managing money.

Yes, I’m talking about keeping track of your finances - those inevitable chores of going through bank statements and spreadsheets to figure out where your money is going, such as invoicing clients and paying your bills.

No matter what niche you might be in, we have to agree you can’t completely digress from managing money - the conveniently omitted element that sustains a business.

Whether you like it or not, managing money is the foundation and an essential part of any business. But we avoid it like a plague. Why?

  • This isn’t a task I know how to do.
  • This isn’t a job I want to learn how to do.
  • This isn’t an area that generate profits and grow my business.
  • This isn’t a domain for anyone starting out with zero experiences and zero funds.

Sounds reasonably fair.

Let’s examine the critical problems in order again:

  1. You have to juggle every aspect of your business, from the brand to the business, from the content strategy to the creative design, and from the marketing to the sale. There will be at least one to two roles you are probably winging at it. You feel overwhelmed and wished there was more time for practice.
  2. You want to boost productivity and earn more time once you’ve acquired knowledge and experience. Prioritising productivity makes practical sense as it has a correlation to your profitability. Therefore, it is reasonable to say being profitable gets you to aspirations, goals and objectives faster. You wished you had a steady stream of cash flow.
  3. You believe managing your finance in an organised and systematic way ensues as you rake in profits. You desire ways to implement and automate your finance, such as hiring or outsourcing to a professional executive. Or perhaps investing in a finance management tool is more cost-effective. You understand the importance of delegating the management of your finance, for you to focus on growing your business.

What are the chances to advance from #1 to #3? Let’s say #3 is the point where you begin automating and scaling your one-man business.

Expect to hover around #1.

That’s a true description of reality because getting yourself orientated with different fields just to run your business takes time. You can’t rush it. But you’ll probably reach #3 faster than anybody else. And that could be due to your many levels of awesomeness. I can’t know for sure.

What’s for sure?

The majority is likely to give up. It is no surprise why 80% of the small businesses fail.

If this hypothesis is correct, how can we ever reach #3?

It seems almost unattainable.

What if I told you that the gap between where you are (#1) and your destination (#3) would be significantly shorter, near zero, if you consider positioning your start point at the end?

To give you an example, let’s reverse and analyse the 3 critical problems.

  1. You begin with managing your finance. Start small for your one-person business. Track the money that flows in and out of your pocket. Every cent is accounted for. You know exactly what you are doing and where your money is going, and whether it contributes to your financial goals. A substantial part of the daily tracking tasks are organised, automated, and systematised.
  1. When you have all the numbers at your fingertips, you are guaranteed to be more financially conscious than the average who doesn’t, about when to spend, when to save, and when to invest. Observe how much more focus you possess and how carefree you might feel when fewer things are weighing on your mind. I don’t even need to tell you what are the chances of higher productivity that accelerate profits. When your business scale, you want to invest in the things that free up more time.
  1. With more time on your side, you can focus more on upskilling, learning a craft you have always wanted to, or settling on a new one that can further bring your business to great heights. Perhaps picking up a new hobby, such as collecting stamps is your thing. That’s pretty much how you gain control of your life. Doing more of the things that matter to you.

Of course, you don’t need to buy into this absurd idea of going backwards. Nobody wants to go against the tide, wading like a helpless dog. Why risk putting yourself in a perilous position?

But do you know what’s the biggest risk, that at some point, most typical entrepreneur/solopreneur might feel guilty of doing?

Not taking any risk.

What’s the worst thing that could possibly happen to you if you decided to jumped on the bandwagon of not doing anything?

Nothing. You will still be who you are 12 months from now.

  • Still in debts.
  • Still in a budget deficit.
  • Still clueless where your money is going.
