Culture is the sum-total of a people's evolving historical and contemporary experience, their values, beliefs and actions consisting of behavior patterns, symbols, and institutions unique to a people, that distinguishes them from another people.

Culture is a System of Thought

  • It can be said that culture, is an explicit and implicit system of thought and behavior based on certain metaphoric, scientific, mythological, theosophical and ideological assumptions, that defines and motivates a people to fashion reality in their own interest, from their cultural common sense.

Culture and Curricula Development

  • Information taken from, Infusion of African and African American Content in the School Curriculum, Proceedings of the First National Conference, October 1989, editors, Asa G. Hilliard, III, Lucretia Payton-Stewart, and Larry Obadele Williams, Aaron Press, Morristown, N.J., 1990,

  • “The Infusion of African and African American Content: A Question of Content and Intent,” Wade W. Nobles, Ph.D., P 4-24.

Cultural Influence of Environment

  • How a people think, talk, eat, walk, play, dress, love, hate, and fight are a consequence of their cultural orientation.

  • Because humans are not born pre-wired and what we learn comes primarily from our environment there are few actions, initiated (individual or group) outside of a cultural influence.
