Talent is Made Not Born… The myth of the overnight success

It’s so adorable when people look at successful people and call them innately talented. What we’ll do to prove that we’re just not able to accomplish things, Big or Small. I met an author once and we were having the most charming conversation talking about our Maine Coon cats, until I asked her what she did for a living. She turned into a press junket interviewee and said she wrote steampunk books for a living. I asked what her practice was - she was quite confused by this. I asked what her daily routine is. Never did get much of an answer. I asked her how long she’d been writing to become her “overnight success” - she laughed and said, Only “10 years”. Since then I’ve watched many interviews, read books, listened to podcasts and TED Talks, and there wasn’t a single “overnight” success that wasn’t built on about 10 years of, eventually, dedicated practice learning and honing skills. The difference between “them and us”? They just started…
