What are the most important poker terms?
Poker is almost a real language. There are so many terms that you might get dizzy sometimes hearing professional poker players talk, but luckily there are a few basic poker terms that you really just need to know to play the game.
Playing a poker hand.
DEALER: This is the player who has to shuffle and deal the cards at the beginning of the hand. The dealer always starts dealing the cards one-by-one and starts with the first player to his left. The dealer ends with the last card to himself.
SMALL BLIND: This is the first player to the left of the dealer. This player must pay a small blind at the start of the hand before seeing the cards. A small blind is a mandatory bet at the start of the hand to initiate betting.
BIG BLIND: The big blind is the 2nd player to the left of the dealer. This player must bet a big blind at the start of the hand before seeing the cards. A big blind is also a forced bet at the start of the hand to initiate betting. The big blind is always 2x the small blind.
HOLE CARDS: The hole cards are the cards that you get from the dealer. These are your cards and your opponents should not see them. It is therefore important that you protect them well. With your cards and the community cards, you have to make a card combination.
COMMUNITY CARDS: The community cards are cards that are for everyone. These are placed on the table. Each player must combine his own hole cards with the community cards to make the strongest possible combination of 5 cards.
PREFLOP: This is the first betting round. At the moment the players have only seen their own cards and there are no community cards on the table yet.
FLOP: The flop comes after the first betting round. These are the first three community cards that are placed on the table and with which the players can combine their cards. After the flop has been placed on the table, the second betting round begins.
TURN: When the second betting round is over, a fourth card is dealt. This is called the turn. After the turn is placed on the table, the 3rd betting round begins.
RIVER: After the 3rd round of betting has ended, a 5th and final card are dealt with. This card is called the river. After the river is on the table, the 4th and final betting round begins.
SHOWDOWN: When 2 or more players are still in the game after the last betting round, the showdown begins. At the showdown, players have to place their cards face-up on the table. The player with the strongest card combination wins the pot.
