The Lewis and Clark Expedition - Part 1: Westward to the Pacific Ocean

This part two of two parts continues one of the greatest adventure stories in American history -- the tale  of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark's incredible expedition across vast unknown stretches of North America.

In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson moved to finalize the United States purchase of the Louisiana Territory and expand the country's western border from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, doubling the young nation in size with the stroke of a pen. Jefferson knew he would quickly need to inform the public about that region. So he turned to his secretary and trusted friend, Meriwether Lewis.

Lewis invited William Clark to join as co-captain. Along with a carefully recruited team, they plunged westward from St. Louis and traced the course of the Missouri River, explored across the fabled Stony or Rocky Mountains on foot, then descended the rivers to the Pacific Ocean. Oh yeah, and then they had to go back again!

Our River History Series coverage of this epic journey requires two presentations to cover all the excitement. Part 1 follows the westward journey across the unknown, meeting with the natives, and struggling on to the Pacific. This installment (Part 2) covers The Return Journey, filled with more amazing events, including the only violence with the Native Americans, dividing up into three groups to explore even more territory, and Lewis getting shot.
