Redo Mesh Selection lets you repeat an existing face selection along a mesh surface. This can speed up workflows that revolve around pattern based designs as it can reduce the amount of pointing and clicking to perform selections.

Works with Blender versions 2.77, 2.78, 2.79

A beta release is available for Blender 2.80 (0_2_0_280)

Blender releases before 2.77 are not currently supported.

Current add-on version: 0.2.0 (updated August 10, 2018)

Updates to Redo Mesh Selection will be released at no charge (for example, if you purchased version 0.1.0 you would not have to pay again to get version 0.1.1 or version 0.2.0).

Usage

First have at least 2 or more faces selected. The faces must be manually selected (no circle, box, lasso, or loop select). The order in which these faces are selected is important as the last two selected faces mark the base of the selection source (what is being copied) and base of the destination (where the copied selection is being copied to). The face selection being copied is all faces up to (and including) the 2nd to last selected face. After the faces are selected, run "Redo Mesh Selection" using one of these three methods:

  • Clicking on the "Redo Selection" Button in the Tools Tab of the Toolshelf
  • Pressing the Keyboard shortcut: Control  Alt  Numpad+
  • Opening the Spacebar menu and typing: Redo Mesh Selection

When Redo Mesh Selection is run it will attempt to recreate the "source" selection starting from the "destination" face (the last face selected). If Redo Mesh Selection is run again after it successfully recreates a pattern it will attempt to recreate the selection source again. The selection source is recreated again using the "destination" face as the new "source" and a new "destination" is plot out using the distance between the original source and destination as a guide.

If the selected faces are changed in between runs, Redo Mesh Selection will interpret this changed selection as a "new" selection and start from scratch using the last two selected faces as a new source and new destination.

Please Note

  • If you run this add-on after selecting a huge number of faces for your base selection, it can place a heavy load on a computer's CPU. The more faces that are selected when the add-on is run, the longer the selection will take to recreate.
  • This add-on only works with selected faces. Other geometry types (verts and edges) are currently unsupported.
  • The source and destination faces must have faces connected one to the other for this add-on to work.
  • Selections can only be recreated in areas of a mesh where the faces form a tessellation (repeating pattern).
