I have a disease called celiac and I cannot eat gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, rye, and oats. Because soy sauce contains wheat flour in Japan, I cannot also eat anything made with soy sauce.
I will become very ill if I eat food containing these main items (wheat, barley, rye, or soy sauce), or any food that contains wheat flour, breadcrumbs, tamari, grain vinegar, Oyster sauce, tempura, miso made from barley, or bread. I cannot eat food fried in the same oil as breaded products / tempura either, as the cross-contamination will get me sick.
I can eat food containing rice, soybeans, buckwheat (soba), yams, tapioca, potatoes, corn, any vegetables, seaweed, cheese, fruit, eggs, meat, chicken, or fish – so long as they are not cooked with wheat flour, soy sauce containing wheat flour. For soba noodles, I can only eat 100% soba with no wheat flour added.
Does this food contain wheat flour, soy sauce, rye, or barley?
