On April 6th, 1997, Amy and I celebrated our one year anniversary. At that time, I was a school teacher and fashioned myself a bit of a poet. I would carry around a journal with me everywhere so that I could scribble any thoughts that came to mind.
On our honeymoon, I began writing a series of poems entitled, “For Amy #...” For the next year, I collected several hundred of these (some I shared and some I didn’t).
As our anniversary came near, I enlisted the help of Jay (Amy’s brother) to design a cover for me. I love the simple imagery of a child’s toy (a tricycle) to illustrate my love for Ames. Love, at is purest, is simple. Jay did a great job (as he is ridiculously talented).
I then convinced the school’s print shop to make some copies for me, and there you have it, I had a gift for our one year.
Now, after being married for over 16 years, I’ve stumbled upon these poems once again in a box. Some seem to be naïve and others seem to be making promises that I had, at that time, no idea how I would keep. But what comes through is a love that has only intensified over the years.
Amy, I love you. I would sign up all over again.
I hope you guys enjoy these poems. I know I did, and I hope Amy does, once again.
