Le nom Horla est fait de «hors» et «là». Le Horla est quelque chose en dehors d'ici, de notre monde. Pas exactement ce que nous appellerions un extraterrestre ou un fantôme, plutôt le futur de l'humanité, l'être pour remplacer l'être humain.
