An Illustrated Advent: Engaging Practices for the Season

Artist and pastor Adam Walker Cleaveland has been providing unique and engaging art for children's moments this past fall, and there has been a strong response to it. Now he has joined up with his wife, Sarah (also a pastor), to put together An Illustrated Advent: Engaging Practices for the Season. This comes in two editions - this Church Edition, and an accompanying Family Edition (which you can buy here).

This Church Edition includes the following:

Five Illustrated Children's Moments: Five Illustrated Children's Moments for the Gospel texts from the Revised Common Lectionary for the four weeks of Advent and the Sunday after Christmas. These are engaging and fun hand-drawn illustrations by Adam - each illustration takes between 4-6 hours to complete. The illustrations also come with a leader's guide which will give you some ideas as to how you could use the illustrations for your time with the children. 

Five Worship Activity Sheets: Adam has designed and drawn five separate worship activity sheets (one for each of the four Sundays in Advent, and one for the Sunday after Christmas). The front has a half-completed drawing and a verse from the Gospel passage, and children are encouraged to complete the drawing using their imagination. The back has a word search, using words from the biblical passage for the day, and a small coloring design on the back. These could also be used for Sunday School, Children's Church or other activities with kids.

11x17 Illustrated Advent Poster: Also included is an 11x17 poster that you can use to decorate your bulletin boards or classrooms. 

Use With the Family Edition

Some churches may wish to use the Church Edition along with the Family Edition. While each can be used on their own, some churches may wish to provide their families with similar types of activities that they can do at home during the season of Advent. The Family Edition features family devotions, coloring sheets for kids, and Advent Calendar and Flat Wise Men (you'll have to click here for more info on that).
