For several years, legislation governing resident permissions to install cameras in individuals’ nursing home rooms has been debated in the Missouri State House and Senate. At the very end of the 2020 legislative session, the state Senate passed a bill allowing Authorized Electronic Monitoring in Missouri’s nursing homes which was signed by Govenor Parsons. The bill will go into effect in late August of 2020.

This timely session allows state nursing home administrators and other management positions whose daily tasks will be affected by Authorized Electronic Monitoring to learn about the history of the bill in Missouri legislature, gain understanding about the benefits to both resident and facility, and ask clarifying questions about implementation and legal aspects of the bill from those intimately involved in its creation.

Objectives:

Review the concept of Authorized Electronic Monitoring (AEM)

Discuss the importance of AEM to staff and residents

Examine legal implementation of AEM (nursing home staff responsibilities, rights, procedures)
