The Mississippi River: Then and Now - About this Video Presentation

This video presentation about “The Mississippi River: Then and Now” shares the mystery and significance of America’s greatest waterway through history and today. Savor amazing stories about the remarkable people and incredible events as the United States expanded westward. The people that came westward to the Mississippi River system were frequently remarkable. They often had great courage, vision, and leadership. They were sometimes complicated, flawed, greedy, corrupt, and even cruel. But they were always fascinating.

And what an impact! These are the incredible stories of how the people, inventions, and events that shaped our rivers also sparked the development and western expansion of the United States.

Native Americans have lived and traded along these rivers for thousands of years. Early European explorers ventured along these waterways, scouting the area for valuable natural resources, agricultural possibilities, and trading opportunities.

As the young United States began to expand westward down the Ohio River to the Mississippi River, these waterways provided the transportation that enabled migration and economic development.

The importance of river navigation and commerce led U.S. leaders through international intrigue to secure access to the river and purchase from Napoleon Bonaparte and France the entire western side of the Mississippi River's drainage basin, plus the important port of New Orleans. Decades later, that land included in the historic Louisiana Purchase was surveyed to include more than 828,000 square miles.

You’ll discover the incredible endeavors of the explorers that set out into unknown regions to broaden knowledge of the continent, its waterway transportations system, and awaiting economic opportunities.

United States history was dramatically altered by the development of machines to enable what formerly had been impossible. Boats powered by steam engines enabled transportation connections to far-flung regions. Steamboats quickly widened access to economic opportunities for business and agricultural development. Supplies and products could efficiently be transported. Transportation also impacted the cultural with more rapid dissemination of news, food, religion, politics, arts, and much more.

During the Civil War, both sides struggled for dominance of the rivers to control the movement of soldiers, food, and military supplies. An extensive series of battles culminated with the campaign to control the stronghold at Vicksburg, Mississippi, which Abraham Lincoln said was the "key" to the war.
