This is the audiobook of my third travel memoir, A Maverick Cuban Way, first published in 2017 and updated. I travelled around Cuba by bus for three weeks after the death of Fidel Castro and report back on my experiences!
A Maverick Cuban Way is a flowing narrative of Cuba after the Castros.
I went to the Bay of Pigs museum and discovered that American-backed rebels had landed in a crocodile swamp. No one told me the Cuban Flag was American in origin.
My most memorable experience was of hiking to Fidel Castro’s hideout from the CIA in the Sierra Maestra with a guide discussing socialism, the Revolution, and every fifteen minutes a different type of plant.
In Havana, I stayed with a woman named Mikalena. Her son was a doctor, as one in every 150 people in Cuba are. Mikalena practised Santería magic.
I went to the Cuba’s Guantánamo lookout and saw secret photos from inside the American base. Later, I met the son-in-law of one of the American marines in the pictures.
The people mostly seemed poor but happy, and there was no homelessness.
I danced salsa in Havana, smoked cigars and hung out in Hemingway’s hangout, the Café Floradita.

From the Introduction:
CUBA is the Cinderella of the world, yet to realise its true worth. It's raggedy with a heart of gold, but at times glitters and has gold dust and rich carriages in the form of classic cars in bright colours. It is not a Western society. Expect the unexpected and it will happen. Batteries in the clockwork of time have stopped and it is like going back to the 1950s both in the cars, and in the shops.

"Awesome book and genuine writing style. As a recent traveler to Cuba myself, I really appreciate how the author really embeds herself in the Cuban culture and stories that make the country so special. Great read (with great pictures). Would definitely recommend!"
