THOUGHTS:
The swearing in ceremony of a witness is actually quite repetitious.  Why don’t we just say to the witness, “Do you promise to tell the truth?”  By adding “the whole truth and nothing but the truth,” we’ve restated the “truth” three different ways.

Isn’t truth the WHOLE truth?  Isn’t truth void of any lies and thus nothing but the truth?  Truth is true totally.  Any small lie, exaggeration or partial truth is not truth.

Many times when Jesus spoke, He used the phrase, “I tell you the truth.”  Truth is truth when the speaker of the truth can be trusted.  He took it a step further in John 14 by calling Himself “the truth.”  Jesus embodies truth and nothing false ever comes from him.

Satan, on the other hand, is the liar, the deceiver.  Truth may come from his mouth, but it will be twisted to fit his own needs and to lead someone astray.

That means that truth has pure intentions, never meaning to mislead, but only to inform and inspire.

Next time you put your hand on the Bible, ask yourself, do you believe it to be the resource which communicates the truth.
