The Journey of the Steamboat "New Orleans" (River History Audiobook Series

The Journey of the Steamboat "New Orleans" (River History Audiobook Series

This is one of the great adventure stories in American history. The first steam-powered boat on the Ohio River and Mississippi River traveled more than 2,200 miles from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania down the to New Orleans. And the series of challenges, travails, and disasters the travelers endured seems out of a Hollywood movie.

The boat was constructed at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania by Nicholas Roosevelt, a new partner of Robert Fulton and Robert Livingston. The remarkable vessel was christened as the "New Orleans" -- named for its ultimate destination. No one in the west had seen mechanized transportation. The idea was revolutionary. In October of 1811, Roosevelt, accompanied by his pregnant wife Lydia, their toddler daughter, and a crew of eight embarked on an extraordinary journey. They endured rapids, floods, fires, threats from Native Americans, and the incredible effects of North America's largest series of earthquakes.

The impact of this invention and this journey brought the ability to move people, products, and information swiftly upstream and downstream. This sparked massive migration and economic development of the Mississippi River valley and eventually to thousands of miles of the continent's interior made accessible by the network of rivers and these new steamboats.
