A basic tutorial: 

• The limiter is designed to never allow signals over 0dbFS
• Click the link button to make both channels have the same settings
• The release knob controls how quickly the automatic gain reduction returns to 0
• The attack knob controls how quickly the automatic gain reduction kicks in.  The limiter itself has a 32 or 64 sample look-ahead peak detection.  I can't remember exactly. 
• The auto-hold figures out the ideal duration to hold at the current gain reduction based on the audio running through it.  
• Uncheck the auto-hold feature to enable the Hold knob and dial in your own hold duration.
• The gain knob applies gain before the signal is limited.
