This audiobook shares the incredible and bizarre story of how Woody Guthrie was contracted by the federal government to write songs promoting the benefits of hydroelectric power. The story is odd and fascinating. The "how" this strange partnership came to be. And then there's the music. A wonderful, diverse, treasure trove of folk music written by a great artist at the height of his inspiration. Woven into the story, Bill performs samples of the musical gems Guthrie wrote. It rings out with his wide-eyed wonder at the scale and beauty and diversity of the Columbia River. The awe-inspiring idea of the immense Grand Coulee Dam. The majestic beauty of the Columbia River Gorge as the river slides through forested mountain peaks rising thousands of feet on each side. The impact on the region, the abundant, renewable, clean, and affordable electricity to attract industry and citizens to grow the economy and create jobs - especially during the Depression - jobs. Plus the benefits of irrigation to the growth of agriculture; navigation for river shipping connecting 465 miles into the interior.

The benefits of the dams came at a dramatic cost to the roadways, railroads, villages, towns, and Native American communities that had to be relocated. Many sacred fishing and trading sites were inundated beneath the waters raised behind these dams. The dams also have had an effect on the decline of returning salmon by up to 90% compared to the returns in the decades preceding the dams. Study and debate continues.

Woody saw the dams for the benefits they would bring. His songs chronicle the history of the region, the areas scenic beauty, and the humble spirit of every person that knows what it feels like to struggle to make their way in this world.

River Historian Bill Wiemuth has worked as a lecturer and performer onboard Columbia River cruises for more than 15 years. He is a passionate student of these great stories and takes pride in sharing them with you. Enjoy!
