When it comes to monochromes, designers are usually hesitant. There are just so many risks involved, risks that not everybody is willing to take.

But you know what? I believe monochromatic designs rock. They have a certain character that a design with various different colors cannot achieve.

What are the benefits of a monotone color scheme?

Simplicity and Harmony

One thing that makes monochromatic designs awesome is the fact that it brings this classy simplicity that a multi-color design may not be able to portray. It also makes the entire design harmonious – nothing clashes, and nothing sticks out like a sore thumb.

Emphasizes Content

Without all that glitter to distract people, you can make the content shine. Colors can sometimes hinder people from having a more thorough understanding of what you have to say. With only a single-color background, your audience can focus on your content.

Emphasizes Important Elements

When you use the monochrome approach to your advantage, you can easily emphasize important elements on your project. Call-to-action buttons, forms, contact details and other similar information can be easily emphasized when you only have a single color to worry about.

If you’re daring enough to take the leap, I say go right in and try designing something using a single color scheme. It can be very liberating, and it can take your design to a whole new level.

It’s also best if you take a look at examples of sites with monochromatic schemes. This could help you get an idea of how other designers laid out their designs. It’s a great way to find inspiration and get a different perspective of how things work.

Try to think of the basics first. Black and white designs would be a great place to start. After all, these are the most basic colors available. Once you learn how to appreciate any black and white design, you can do anything with monochrome schemes.

Below are some amazing pictures, all of them in black and white. Just look at all the drama that each image showcases. See how emotions are emphasized even more, and look at the way patterns seem to have a more vibrant look. From here, it will be easier to slowly ease the idea into your designs.

You can use these images on any websites you may be designing, or on posters you could be working on. There are different themes used, and you’ll definitely find a few you can use.
