The epic film classic based on Ayn Rand's novel.

(Italy. 1942). 2 Hrs 55 Mins, B/W, Italian with English subtitles.

Ayn Rand's powerful semi-autobiographic novel, We the Living was made into a film in Italy during WWII without her permission or even her knowledge.

The story of beautiful, strong-willed Kira (Alida Valli), her fugitive lover, Leo (Rosanno Brazzi), and the secret police captain, Adrei (Fosco Giachetti) --all in a struggle to live their lives under an oppressive regime, proved to be timeless and universal.

The movie became an instant sensation - the highest grossing film of 1942 in Italy. But the movie’s anti-authoritarian storyline roused public sentiment against the Mussolini regime, and the dictator ordered the film to be banned and destroyed. At great personal risk, the filmmakers hid the negatives. When they were finally rediscovered decades later, Rand authorized a new version that combined the two original films.
