Objilla is an advanced obj and mtl importer for Houdini™.

Objilla creates materials from the mtl files. It automatically assigns color and normal map textures from .mtl, as well as per face color and transparency. It supports objs with many materials (multi-material) and lets you import multiple objs at once. By creating automatically the materials, Objilla saves you time.

Most of the 3d models saved in .obj format were created for older rendering engines, so it is not possible a 1 to 1 "translation" of the material. Also, the .obj and .mtl formats are often "abused", aka each vendor creates its own, usually non-standard implementation. Regardless, Objilla saves you from many repetitive steps and lets you use these models more easily.

Also, the .obj format remains the format of choice for new, innovative software, such as game engines, photogrammetry apps, Zbrush™, pipeline utilities.
