Everything I know about handling files in a serverless environment using S3 signed URLs is packed in this book. That includes countless hours of documentation reading to figure out how the pieces work and the various attempts to provide solutions for various problems.
This book is for fellow developers, the people who ultimately get the task to implement a solution to allow users to download and upload files in a serverless environment in the AWS cloud.
When I initially started experimenting with signed URLs I quickly realized how easy it is to end up with a solution that is unreliable and insecure. While the former is more of an annoyance for the users, the latter can be a serious problem.
As an AWS certified security specialist, my main focus is to provide secure solutions. Throughout the book you'll find analyses how each choice or piece of technology affects the security of signed URLs.
You'll learn not only how to use signed URLs to download files but also:
* How they work under the hood which is essential to know how to implement them securely
* How to use them with other services, such as CloudFront and KMS
* How to implement file uploads
* How to troubleshoot common problems
... and a lot more

This book is written in a handbook style. In the first chapter you'll learn why signed URLs are useful then how they work inside AWS, especially which services are needed. That gives the big picture view how everything works.
The second chapter walks you through a simple implementation detailing each part and covers the typical problems. It is designed to help you hit the ground running with your own implementation.
The third chapter provides solutions for specific problems. It is designed to provide thorough yet easy-to-use examples to help you overcome any hurdles with your implementation.
The book has a ton of code examples and illustrations, and there are almost a dozen ready-to-deploy code repositories linked to provide a reference implementation.
Is in-depth knowledge of AWS required?
This book assumes some technical knowledge and a basic understanding of the AWS platform. If you've already written a Lambda function and you've seen Terraform code you should be fine.
