Dr. Bryan Miller was a therapist for nine years before discovering he could have greater freedom (and income) using his knowledge and skills to help organizations and businesses with their "people issues." Bryan began teaching these principles to graduate students. Students regularly ranked the class as "the most practical class" they took in their curriculum and many stated it should be put into print form. This book is the result.
Beyond the Couch is a step-by-step guide aimed at helping professionals looking to adapt or expand their careers into working as a human systems consultant--using your skills and knowledge to help a people in all arenas not just in a "healthcare practice." Can you see yourself beyond the couch?
The book provides over 300 pages of step-by-step advice on how to develop your own contracts working with "larger systems" of people. The book helps therapists learn how do develop opportunities, turn those into proposals that will get them a paid contract, what to do in the counseling process, how to price your services, and more.
Comments about the Book:
Life Changing Book! In Dr. Miller's book "Beyond the Couch," the introduction was mind grabbing. If the intent of the introduction was to inspire, he achieved the intent. After reading the introduction I told other therapists about the prospect of doing business consulting. I even talked to the CEO at my place of employment and asked for a consulting task. The strength of Dr. Miller's book was its utility. Everything written in the book had its usefulness [for example] Dr. Miller did not give examples of theories unless he also demonstrated how those theories were going to achieve the bottom line, becoming a consultant. Because of this, the book offered a quick reference to any question that I had while I was completing my own consultation project. ~ V. Adams
Great Professional Tool. Before reading this book the concept of using my skills as a therapist to build a career as a consultant never crossed my mind. It's also something that I am quite sure that I, a non-sales, non-aggressive, non-abstract type person never would have naturally been drawn to. My confidence flees when I enter gray area. Exploring uncharted waters isn't even a temptation to me. However, the case, which Dr. Miller presents in his book, is quite compelling and breaks the process of becoming a consultant, the work of consulting, and the details involved down enough that even I started to be able to envision it as a valid career option. I was impressed with the level of comfort I felt in the process and I feel that it was due to the preparation his book had given me. I genuinely feel that it is within my reach to add consulting to my career. This is no small feat because, honestly, until I actually tried it, I was very skeptical. Dr. Miller managed to give me what I needed in his book -- a vision for what a consulting practice would look like. In a pleasant conversational style his words drew perimeters around what was all gray matter in my mind before while simultaneously leaving open the possibility for limitless expression of the basic consulting principles he described. ~ M. Remarkably Useful Tool! Beyond the Couch is easily one of the most useful books I've read about career building! Dr. Miller begins by offering the narrative of his personal career journey and makes it easy for the reader to connect with him right away. The book then explores the mindset of therapists and Dr. Miller presents his ideas from the same "systems perspective" that us therapists are trained to use in our clinical work. He also discusses the world of business and distinguishes it from the worlds of clinical work and academia. Lastly, he takes you through the process of actually building a consulting career. The amount of detail and practical advice is amazing!
Throughout the book, the tone is very engaging, he uses plain language, and best of all a wealth of practical advice and tools are offered in each chapter. Although going "beyond the couch" may not be for all therapists, this book inspired my own consulting career (which is going well so far!) and is worth far more than the paper it's printed on. Easily a five star rating! ~ ARM
Note ~ We also offer a Quick Start Guide that is a companion to this book. It provides a short bullet-type reminder of the steps of consulting. This is a tool that can be printed out and carried with you to do a "quick check" of what you need to be doing an any stage of the process to keep you on track.
