My Cape Breton Home (Jerry Holland, Canada)

This is perhaps the best-known composition of the late Jerry Holland, the great fiddler and composer from Cape Breton. The very simple melody offers us some lovely harmonic possibilities including a variety of chord substitutions in the A part and a simple but powerful rising bass line in the B part.

The arranging ideas are all very accessible and include: two and three note chords, triplets, an ascending bass line, drones, arpeggio fills, grace notes, valley rolls, melodic runs, dissonance, chord substitutions including the use of relative minors & secondary dominants, and dynamics (as always!). I love playing this beautiful tune and hope you will as well!
