        Conscious Muscle Control: Glutes and Hamstrings

        Conscious Muscle Control: Hamstring and Glutes teaches you how to activate (and feel) the muscles at the back of your thighs, knees and hips (the Hamstrings and the Gluteus Maximus).

        These muscles can be used to resist forward bending or to help you lower into a forward bending position with control.

        If you think of your arms, head and torso as a massive set of weights, the hamstrings and glutes are responsible for lifting and lowering that weight in gravity-assisted forward-bending yoga poses.

        In inverted positions like headstand or handstand, these muscles can be used to lift the weight of the legs themselves.

        Conscious Muscle Control: Hamstrings and Glutes uses simple exercises to teach you how to activate and relax your glutes and hamstrings at will. You’ll also learn to feel when they are active and when they are relaxed. And you'll learn how to increase activation strength.

        Often times I'll use a basic set of activation exercises in my classes. If these exercises don't help then I have a fall-back set of exercises. Both types of exercise are included.

        You'll learn how to activate your glutes and hamstrings whether you are standing on your target leg or it is lifted. You'll learn how to activate your leg muscles one leg at a time and both legs simultaneously.

        You'll develop a deeper awareness of your body.

        It includes a basic set of activation exercises and if those exercises don’t help you activate your glutes and hamstrings (or feel when they are active) a second set of “alt” exercises are also included. These “alt” exercises are the exercises I use for students who have difficulty feeling and controlling their hamstrings and glutes.

        Conscious muscle control helps you to practice controlling your glutes and hamstrings to the point that you can activate or relax either of these muscles at will without having to think about how to do it.

        Because the glutes and hamstrings work on both the hip and the knee you’ll develop better awareness and control of these joints as well.
