About this workshop . . .
If you are an entertainment industry professional wondering what hypnosis is, how it is induced, and how can be used by creative pros to make media more entertaining, compelling, and emotionally evocative, you will find this workshop/demonstration interesting to attend.
You will learn:
- What the hypnotic state is and a few ways it can be triggered
- Why most people can be hypnotized and who often can’t be
- How you can tell when someone is in a hypnotic state of mind.
- A formal hypnotic induction method which works for most people
- How the “entertainment” most of us like best draws us in using hypnotic techniques
It is important to note that this lecture will not focus on, or address in any way, the therapeutic applications of hypnosis. We also will not be discussing self hypnosis for any purpose. The objective of this workshop is to address only ethical entertainment applications of this tool set.
The state of mind we refer to as “hypnosis” is one most of us drop into and out of throughout the day. It is a natural, and naturally occurring, state which most successful entertainers intuitively master inducing over the course of their careers.
This workshop is designed to allow those who attend to learn more about how the human mind operates and how it is entertained.
This workshop will be led by Dr Mark N. Gasson a British neuroscientist and visiting research fellow at the Cybernetics Research Group University of Reading, UK. He pioneered developments in direct neural interfaces between computer systems and the human nervous system, and has developed brain–computer interfaces. From 2004 to 2009 Gasson headed a group of academics and industry professionals drawn from 24 institutions across Europe as part of the European Commission funded FIDIS project targeting various aspects of digital identity and privacy, in particular emerging technologies used for identification and profiling. In 2010 he was the General chair for the IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society.
Mark is also a highly skilled hypnotist whose very successful fringe festival show, CHARLATAN, introduced Hollywood audiences to the techniques used by Victorian mediums to entertain and defraud audience that attended mentalist demonstrations and seances. His interest and experimentation into hypnotic states has everything to do with his research into how the human brain interfaces with the world, how it learns, how it adapts, and what it understands.
