Grandpa’s Waltz (from Paul van Arsdale)

This fun & sweet tune comes from the playing of influential hammered dulcimer player, Paul van Arsdale. I had the pleasure of meeting and jamming with Paul in the early-mid 1980’s. The melody sounds easy, but it is a surprisingly challenging tune, especially in the arranging ideas. This piece features a standard descending bass line. However, the arranging ideas present the bass line in various ways. There are many concepts/lessons in this piece: thinking chords as you learn a piece; creating and executing bass lines; lots of arranging ideas and technique; the use of some big intervals; a very accessible backup. The arrangement is challenging, but you can pick and choose which ideas to master.
