Half Past Four (Ed Haley, U.S.)

0 ratings

Ed Haley’s (1885-1951) compositions are widely popular in old-time circles. “Half Past Four” is one of the best-known. Concepts/skills include how to “see” a chord progression in the structure of a tune, the many advantages of using a left-hand lead (and for that matter using a consistent lead), “swing,” accent shifts, how to create variations using drone notes, a moving bass line using drones, note replacement, using brief ventures into harmony to create variations, the somewhat perilous effects of toying with the “hooks” or “anchors” of a tune, a variety of rhythm ideas and more. Whew!
