      Potter vs. The Clay

      WATCH IT ON YOUTUBE

      PURPOSE:
How dare we tell God what to do.

      LOCATION:
      Artist’s area

      PROPS:
      • Clay
      • Working area (board, table or bench)
      • Potter’s wheel (optional)
      • Clay pots (optional)

      TIME:
      4-5 minutes

      CHARACTERS:
Potter: An artist (male or female) dressed to work
Clay: An arrogant, cocky offstage voice (male or female). Try to find a voice that is funny and playful.

      PRODUCTION NOTE:
Make sure the voice of the “clay” has a clear view of what is happening onstage. Make every effort not to put the person in the back where people will hear him and be distracted. Position that person offstage, looking through a window, from backstage or maybe with a wireless viewing from a TV monitor.

      THOUGHTS:
The idea of clay talking to a potter appears four times in the Bible. In Isaiah 29:16, the prophet uses the imagery of a potter and clay. The clay argues saying the potter did not “make” him and the potter “knows nothing.” In Isaiah 45:9, the clay gets nosy wondering what the potter is up to and denies that the potter has any “hands.” In Jeremiah 18:5-10, the potter (God) tells the nation of Israel that they are in His hands and He can build up or tear down as He pleases. Paul in Romans 9:21 acknowledges that the Potter has the right to do whatever He wants with the clay.

This clay is pretty arrogant, argumentative, disruptive and in denial. Could that be us? Do we tell God what’s best? Do we insult His intelligence? Do we struggle with His plans?

An artist has big plans for his creation, putting all of his artistic talent into his work. God is the same with us, desiring a wonderful future. How can we question the future when we cannot see it? Our perspective is limited.

We must make ourselves more pliable, more compliant in the hands of the great Designer. Dried up clay is useless and tossed away. Soft, spongy clay can be used for a number of wonderful designs.
