The name is made from the French « hors » that means outside and « là » that means here. The Horla is something outside of here, of our world. Not exactly what we would call an extra-terrestrial or a ghost rather the future of the humanity, the being to replace the human being.

The story is written in the first person, and that gives it a flavor of authenticity.
