Kijang Trans Am is an experiment in applying the principles of the 3 minute rock song to Balinese music. I chose Gong Kebyar because of it's ubiquity and explosive energy, the closest equivalent to the American garage band in the world of gamelan. But although these 5 pieces contain moments of sheer bombast and vulgarity, this project is less about bravado, more about the inner colors of rock and kebyar: commonalities in riff, energy, structure and feeling. The question is, as in rock&roll, is it possible to concentrate the experiments and idioms of contemporary gamelan into short, accessible “nuggets” that still pack artistic punch, yet retain their integrity?
