This year-long lettering journey is inspired by a different master each month. With a sneak-peek into their studios and practices, we will have the opportunity to learn how those working as visual practitioners, calligraphers, and graffiti artists use the same tools we use—and introduce us to new ones—to make letters. So grab your markers and let’s go!
Kelvy Bird is an internationally recognized graphic facilitator primarily working with the Presencing Institute and MIT, among other community-based and global organizations. In 2016, she co-edited the anthology Drawn Together through Visual Practice, and in 2017 released Generative Scribing: A Social Art of the 21st Century. An artist by training, Kelvy received her BFA in painting and BA in Art History from Cornell University. She lives in Somerville, Massachusetts.
NOTE: THIS IS A SINGLE SESSION
In this ~1 hour session, Kelvy talks about those who influenced her lettering style, how Presencing has inspired the "Social Art of Scribing", letting the essence of lettering compliment her gestural marks, and the tools she uses.
Kelvy generously closes the session with these inspiring words:"I would really encourage everyone to copy the things that help you get your bearings on your practice…but as soon as possible, lean into your own style and just love it. Find your own joy - in your hand, in your being, in what wants to come through you.”
Be sure to have the following supplies on hand:
• Plenty of paper
• Your favorite markers
Kelvy uses wedge/chisel tip dry erase and permanent markers.
• Lettering exemplar
• Demo notes
Please be patient as the PDFs and video downloads. It may take a few minutes.
