This year-long lettering journey is inspired by a different master each month. With a sneak-peek into their studios and practices, we will have the opportunity to learn how those working as visual practitioners, calligraphers, and graffiti artists use the same tools we use—and introduce us to new ones—to make letters. So grab your markers and let’s go!
Sharon is an Austin,Texas based artist whose mixed-media fine art often combines images with text and lettering. Formal training in calligraphy at the Roehampton Institute, University of Surrey, London, is the basis for all of her work which has evolved into a more abstract, gestural and mark-making approach. Sharon’s award winning artwork appears in the publications Letter Arts Review, Somerset Magazine, Lark Book “The Art & Craft of Hand Lettering,” and the Calligrapher’s Engagement Calendar. In addition to making & exhibiting art, she teaches locally through her studio and at the Austin Contemporary Art School, as well as workshops throughout the USA and Canada and Italy. Sharon has been a faculty member at many International Calligraphy conferences, as well as a program director for the Literally Letters calligraphy program at Ghost Ranch, New Mexico. Lettering remains a passion, and she loves adapting formal calligraphy and lettering skills to the world of sketch notes and graphic recording.
NOTE: THIS IS A SINGLE SESSION
In this ~1.5 hour session, Sharon helps us find our natural italic slope through structural rhythmic exercises. She covers minuscules, majuscules, and flourishing. In a short amount of time she takes us from practical letterforms to exercising freedom then helps us close the gap.
Be sure to have the following supplies on hand:
• plenty of paper
• variety of monoline markers and pens for practicing rhythm: NoOne round nib, FineOne round nib, other fine line pens
• ArtMarker or other brush nib markers/pens for practicing once the rhythmic form is established
• Lettering exemplar
• Demo notes
• Italic guidance/joining letters
Please be patient as the PDFs and video downloads. It may take a few minutes.
