How You Can Help Another Woman Move Toward Restoration From Abuse

Know someone struggling through the ravaging effects of abuse in her past?

Does she confide in you? Are you frustrated or tongue-tied because you want to help her but don't know how? This first course in our HemTouchers series is for the woman with little or no background in counselling who wants an easy-to-follow, faith-based story approach to helping another woman on her journey to restoration from sexual abuse.

Not a replacement for therapy

This is not clinical nor is it a replacement for therapy. This is a tool designed to help you aid a woman with abuse in her past to get unstuck and to gain a healthy perspective shift from which healing comes much more easily.

What exactly is a faith-based story approach to healing?

It is an actionable process of tackling the issues, pain and questions commonly shared by abused women (i.e., anger, shame, misplaced guilt, etc.) by deep-diving into God's Word--especially into those narratives where she will see the very same dynamics of her everyday life displayed. We will also examine the outworking of what we learn in Scripture through relevant, personal, contemporary stories that will open up a whole new world of opportunities for her.

Actionable? What will I/she/they have to do?

Besides riveting biblical narratives and relevant contemporary stories, you will also be given practical exercises and activities to introduce to her which are designed to help her go beyond defeat and fear to the victory and confidence she was designed to have. They may not always be easy for her to engage in, but the extent to which she does will largely determine how much she benefits from this course.

Do I have to be a storyteller in order to make this work?

No, you do not need to be a storyteller. You will have video and/or audio presentations of the biblical narratives and contemporary stories we will use. You may choose whether to retell those stories yourself or replay them for the woman on her journey to restoration.

Will this course help me give good answers to the tough questions my friend asks me about the devastation of abuse?

Yes. If she says things like: "I would never follow a God who would allow me to be abused when He had the power to prevent it." "Where was He when I was being ruined for the rest of my life?" "Will I ever live a life without constant fear?" "If only that person were dead . . ." "Will I ever have a meaningful, intimate relationship?" or "Will I ever be normal again?" you're in the right place.

Let this propel you as you go

It is okay for the women you work with to be angry for having been abused. I would be surprised if they were not angry. But it is not okay for them to stay that way. There comes a time in the lives of women on the rise to make a choice between staying and going. . . staying with the status quo or going for greater. This is that time.

3 Essential Keys

This course is divided into 3 main sections:

I. The Double Detour: What happens when you are twice re-routed--first away from what is common, then away from what is safe; the surprising truth as to where all transformation begins.

II. The Double Dip: Exploring the ravaging effects of being plunged into someone else's sin and then plunged into the captivity of overwhelm, hopelessness, conflicting feelings, etc., afterwards; the everyday handling of those effects, what the open door to healing looks like and how to walk through it.

III. The Double-Do: Using new life tools and using the power of epilogue.
