Introduction & Problem
There is a bunch of web-based wireframing applications on the market which you can use. My personal experience is that these tools work well for quick prototyping of huge and complex products but not that well if you want to create a demo app for presentation purposes in short time without involving expensive designers.
And I’ll quickly explain why: demo apps are being created for presentation and demonstration purposes, mostly for new products. That’s why it helps to add some typographic style, color, images or any other graphic. This is actually not the idea of typical wireframing which ignores these stylings and just focusses on functionality, behaviour and priority of content.
Also, good tools are quite expensive and the free ones mostly lack in terms of usability, customisation, loading time and complexity.
Idea & Solution
That’s why I have created my own wireframe kit in PowerPoint (there’s also kits for Photoshop and Sketch, which are at least equally good!). The kit includes a huge variety of UI elements that you can use to build your demo app.
Why PowerPoint?
There’s two main reasons why I have created this kit in PowerPoint and not Photoshop or Sketch. Reach and educated behaviour. With over 1 billion installations worldwide it’s one of the most frequently used software products on the market. And: people know how to use it. We have used it in high school to create presentations, it comes pre-installed with almost every corporate device and people are nor afraid of using it (like people are with Photoshop, Sketch and other equally complex software products).
Another benefit of PowerPoint compared to web-based wireframing tools is the ability to customise your design. Most wireframing tools have very few features. You can’t really customise the UI elements to your needs. As we have learned earlier, this is not the idea of wireframing but if you want to use your demo app to showcase your product to investors, employees, friends or family — of course — some kind of design or visual language is a huge benefit. I have uploaded a variety of graphic designs to my Behance profile to show what PowerPoint (all created with this tool) is capable of.
