Quick Load (addon for Blender 2.76+ and 2.80+)
If you need to quickly try on a lot of textures on your model, then this addon was created specifically for this. The addon supports loading objects and any other elements of the scene.
It can also be used to quickly load and change the brush or texture for the world, etc.
The key point is that the open File Browser is used for work, which allows you to immediately see a preview of the picture and move freely around the disks.
Steps to work:
1. Install the addon.
2. In the add-on panel, specify the name of the image that you want to quickly change. (Access to the panel is in all the right places)
3. In the open File Browser, select a picture and click 'Load image from file browser' button in the add-on panel or Q on the keyboard.
Everything is very simple.

* Added renaming of texture to newly loaded.
