Smoking Cigarettes – a Talking Points Lesson Plan for English Reading & Speaking

This is part of the Talking Points lesson series for Intermediate to Advanced students.

This is a slightly taboo lesson plan based on the subject of smoking cigarettes.

These days most young people seem to regard smoking as a terrible habit – unhealthy, expensive not to mention that it stinks. But there are still a small number of young people who take up the habit.

You may have such a person in your class – the other students will be quick to point this person out.

The lesson plan deals with smoking but then you can talk about bad habits in general in the class. Most of your students may not smoke but they may have other bad habits – like playing smartphone games or eating too much sugar.

This topic can make the students reveal some hidden information about themselves!

But the subject matter should be of great interest to all the students as it is so topical. This lesson plan is perfect for any English or ESL class. Great for IELTS speaking too!

The lesson comes complete with:

• a 500-word article

• a table of essential vocabulary

• a big list of questions for discussion

Start the class with the three opening questions and then do the reading. Then you can go through all the vocabulary – or set it as homework for the students to do later.

Then there is a big list of questions that are designed to get your students talking.

It comes in easy to use PDF format, ideal for printing for your needs. Use it again and again for your English/ESL classes.
