This was the most recent instalment of my Bach project:
Now I am making the second one. Actually a re-recording of this record I made in 2009, but totally re-arranged in new tunings and keys (I'll tell you all about this in the monthly podcasts). https://newcape.bandcamp.com/album/prayers-and-dances-ii
Now for the backstory (warning, slight rant so feel free to skip to "But Bach!"):
The recording industry is fucked. We have been sold a load of nonsense by big tech companies who are raking in money from consumer/subscribers. Once again big business has co-opted human creativity (which is born out of love and the love of work and exploration) and turned it into a soulless money factory for a few wankers who we'll never meet and who don't give a stuff about music.
So as musicians we need to find ways to fund our musical work. As usual. Good, let's get on with it, no use giving more energy to the data kings. They're selling the illusion of fame and fortune without the work. They're also selling the idea that we can't live without them. (And I must thank Anil Prasad for pointing this last point out for me. It should have been a warning sign already: do this ~(for us) and we'll give you things beyond your wildest imaginings, look how it worked for x and y and z. Come on, that's the oldest trick in the book.)
By subscribing you get
- a recorded track a month,
- the notation in staff and tab - should that be of use.
- a podcast recording which is a deep dive into the piece, discussing different recordings of it, the process of translating to guitar and anything else interesting about that month's Bach work. In other words a look into the process.
At the end of the year you get a download of the whole album from Bandcamp. If there are enough subscribers I will release it on physical mediums like vinyl and CD and long time subscribers would get copies or discounts or whatever we can work out - we'll have to see how many people come on board. With enough this subscription could be a subscription to the physical medium of your choice. Here's to hoping! You can choose the amount you pay with 5 the minimum.
I will be creating other projects like this, for example I have just launched one on the music of Ali Farka Touré here:
so only subscribe if you love Bach and you would like to be part of my project to bring his music into my world of playing. There will be others that reflect the music you love if you love other music I make and not Bach (who doesn't like Bach? really?).
These are the pieces you will get:
Sonata No. 2 in A minor, BWV 1003
Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004
Ciaccona (1,2 and 3)
So that should take 11 months.
The scores will help you play them yourself, then we can learn them together, and the music will make you part of the process month by month, an intimate journey with Bach and with me.
I hope you're keen to join in. The first instalment will arrive in the middle of next month. All future ones will arrive on the 15th of the month. I am planning to do the Fuga first even though its the second movement. But its magnificent and I cant wait to share it with you.
PS if you're already a Patreon you're already helping towards this project and depending on your tier (20 dollars and up) you will receive these things too.
