      SAMPLE POEM

      Early Sunset

      Remember late Autumn afternoon?
We stood in the middle of a parking lot,
      each unwilling to move forward
      or turn back,
      terrified

      To recognize significance
of this place we found ourselves.
Thirty seconds and a strange, new wind
left us at once complete, bereft.
Your cheek brushed mine and we
held on, already knowing sting of letting go.

I saw you watch me as I walked away.
      Concentrated color of
      early fall sunset spilled over,

like beautiful love born in me then.
I sleep now by day but come alive
      on Autumn afternoons.
