The Eagle's Whistle (Traditional March, Ireland)

0 ratings

This simple but lovely Irish pipe tune (dating back possibly over 300 years) provides us an excellent example of the power of using simple ideas in arranging. The tune is believed to be the ancestor of the well-known fiddle tune Bonaparte’s Retreat. This is a superb tune for players of all levels. By putting the melody entirely in the left hand, we open up many possibilities including: (1) the use of two note chords to form a bass line in the A part; (2) two note chords that are “separated” in physical distance from the melody (e.g. 3rds dropped down an octave). Additional ideas include bringing out the bass line further by using drone notes in the right hand, valley rolls, arpeggio fills and melodic runs. Take your time with this meditative tune!
