I recently recorded this lovely and simple piece from The Netherlands on A Cold Winter’s Day with Scottish National Fiddle Champion Elke Baker. The melody is not challenging at all but there are many lessons to be learned: (1) How to create an effective chord progression using major & minor chords, dominant 7ths, suspensions and secondary dominants.; (2) How a left-hand lead facilitates a descending bass line; (3) The effective use of mostly two and three note chords; (4) “Seeing” the chord progression in the melody, backup and arrangements AND integrating all the pieces; (5) Using the full range of the instrument but playing the piece and arrangement in both octaves; (6) How to create an effective backup that brings out the harmonization and movement in the chord progression. A great piece for all levels of player!
