One of the most important things to start becoming aware of your cognitive distortions might be to take a look at your thoughts from a different perspective.
Using a Thought Record Journal can help you get started.
Why does this exercise work? It shows you that your thoughts are not so powerful as they seem. Making them ‘real’ gives you an outsider perspective of the situation, and you realize they lose a bit of their power when you evaluate them.
After you are done adding your thought to the Journal, take some time to take a deep breath. Don’t try to fight your thoughts, accept what they are (just thoughts), and thank them for trying to save you from something.
