Hello from the Futures.
TIME MACHINE is a toolkit by verynice that makes it easy and fun for individuals and organizations to map out their possible futures. This is done by walking you through a series of activities that result in a future scenario and timeline.
The TIME MACHINE Experience
This experience includes five key phases: Prepare for takeoff, Enter the portal, Travel time, Grab a souvenir, and Reflect on your trip.
To prepare for takeoff, you’ll have a short safety briefing, and then take part in a written reflection exercise. Next, you’ll enter the portal and explore the current trends and emerging issues that are most relevant to you. Then, you’ll travel through time by creating a series of written scenarios. Finally, you’ll create a souvenir that brings your scenario to life, and a visual timeline that takes you from the future you imagined, back to today.
Why write future scenarios?
Future scenarios are brief narratives that make your possible futures more tangible, and less mysterious. Professional futurists use scenarios as a way to paint a picture of what life in the future might be like. This toolkit includes simplified versions of real approaches that real futurists use today.
How does this work? Do I need anything else to play?
This toolkit includes simple, step-by-step instructions. You can play TIME MACHINE on your own, or with a large group of people.
- Suggested Duration: 2.5–3 hours.
- Materials: Pens and Scratch Paper. 1 4-sided die, 1 20-sided die. If die are not available, an online number generator can be used. It is not mandatory, but if this is done as a group, flipcharts and dot stickers are recommended.
What's the deal with this being Pay-What-You-Want??
The toolkit is available on a Pay-What-You-Want basis. We do not expect any compensation for our resources/materials as we want this to be as accessible as possible to anyone and everyone. Our mission is to build capacity, not to make money. This said, if you are able to contribute, it is greatly appreciated! We recommend a donation of $25-50. Another way to support our commitment to creating open access resources is to hire us to facilitate this experience for you or your company. Workshop rates start at $2,500, but we provide discounts and pro-bono experiences for non-profit organizations. Please reach out to firstname.lastname@example.org (not .com!) for more information. Proceeds are invested back into the project, allowing us to dedicate time toward producing even more resources. Thanks!
