Waiting for the Boatsman (Traditional, U.S.)

0 ratings

I met Melvin Wine in the early 1980's in a park jam at The Augusta Heritage Festival. As a relatively new (and clueless) fiddle player, I didn’t know who he was at the time. In old-time fiddle circles, he was widely known for being the source for many tunes that have survived because of his repertoire. Waiting for the Boatsman is one of those tunes that is still alive because of Melvin. (This tune is not related to Dance Boatman Dance or Boatman.) The chords and melody are straightforward. Still the tune affords us the possibility to explore a few approaches to backup and to add arranging ideas while still maintaining the integrity of the tune. This is a good illustration of left hand lead.
