Waiting for the Boatsman (Traditional, U.S.)

I met Melvin Wine in the early 1980's in a park jam at The Augusta Heritage Festival. As a relatively new (and clueless) fiddle player, I didn’t know who he was at the time. In old-time fiddle circles, he was widely known for being the source for many tunes that have survived because of his repertoire. Waiting for the Boatsman is one of those tunes that is still alive because of Melvin. (This tune is not related to Dance Boatman Dance or Boatman.) The chords and melody are straightforward. Still the tune affords us the possibility to explore a few approaches to backup and to add arranging ideas while still maintaining the integrity of the tune. This is a good illustration of left hand lead.

      Here's What You Get:

Option 1: $10 (Sheet music only - PDF)

Basic tune, backup, and arranging ideas

Option 2: $12 (Sheet music (PDF) PLUS a video play-through)

A video play-through of the arranged tune by Ken (the video is shot from over his shoulder so that you can see hammering patterns and note choices). Watch while looking at the sheet music or play along with Ken!

Option 3: $32 (All of the above PLUS video lessons)

Ken talks through the tune, chord choices, hammering patterns, backups, embellishments, arranging and more on his dulcimer (also shot from above so that you can see what he's doing).

      • Hammering
      • Backup (A part)
      • Backup (B part)

***Videos can be streamed, downloaded, or viewed in the Gumroad App on mobile devices. Watch your email for instructions after purchase***

It's like having private mini-tutorials from Ken that you can watch over and over!

NOTE: Even if you already own the sheet music, your purchase ensures that you receive the latest updated versions, and future additions to new arranging ideas, backups and so forth as Ken experiments and develops his playing of the tune.

Thank you for your support - I hope you enjoy the tune! Please do not share your purchased music and videos.
