So you've installed WordPress.org and activated a free theme ... now what? How do you take that theme from "everybody has this" to "this is totally me"?

Enter the 5-day WordPress Theme Hack Workshop.

Over the course of 5 modules, delivered by email, you'll learn how to transform your website, starting with some of the simplest changes you can make, and building each day towards more challenging (but still doable!) tweaks. This is a great way for beginners to learn more about WordPress, by poking and prodding and moving things around (aka, the fun way)!

What's covered?

The lessons in this course are intended to get you speaking WordPress' language. From finding your way around the Dashboard to diving into css, html, and php. You'll get five action-packed modules, starting with simple tweaks and building up to more technical changes:

  • Day one - Customize your header
  • Day two - Upgrade your fonts
  • Day three - To sidebar or not to sidebar
  • Day four - Make your footer work for you
  • Day five - 404 page + bonus modules

By the end you'll have the groundwork laid for a site that is totally custom + just right for you.

A computer with Internet access and a self-hosted website with WordPress.org. Self-hosted can, and usually does, mean hosted by your web host. Almost all popular hosts provide the famous 1-click WordPress install, so follow your web host's instructions to set this up before you begin. This class is not for WordPress.com sites.

You can search for free themes on your WordPress Dashboard. Use the Feature Filter to help you narrow it down (and ideally look for one that has a Responsive Layout). Something I like to do I start browsing for themes is to sketch out what I want on a piece of paper. It sounds like such a basic thing to do, but the fact is it's very easy to get distracted by slick layouts and pretty images (images that very often aren't included in the actual themes). Picking something with a layout and functionality that are as close as possible to what you want will save you lots of time in the long run. (By no means does it need to be an exact match - that's what this course is for!)

If it's August 6 and you haven't received your first lesson, please check your Social and Promotions tab (if you're using Gmail), as well as your spam folder. If you have any other questions at all, or get stuck at any point during the course, please email me at stephanie [at] dekiroo.com.

Important note: This is a class about WordPress.org, but it is not produced by WordPress nor affiliated with it in any way.
