La Marseillaise is the French national anthem. It was written in 1792 by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle, orignally called "War Song for the Rhine Army". It is a revolutionary song and an anthem to freedom and against tyranny and foreign invasion. It is a march style anthem and it has been incorporated into various pieces of classical and popular music.
