Z-index is an app for Mac and Windows which plays nearly any video from the web on top of other native apps in a nondisturbing way. 😍
Integrates seamlessly with Chrome and Firefox.
While I'm working on my side-projects I usually watch videos about new technologies, startups, meetups (etc.) in the background. To do so, I have to open a new Chrome window and place it on my screen in a way so it won't disturb me + will keep me productive + won't eat up a lot of screen estate. 💻
It's frustrating to do this every time + it's hard to find a good spot on my screen for Chrome + it always disappears in the background when other apps became active / gain focus... 😡
...so I decided to solve my problem by building an always-on-top video player app which integrates seamlessly with Chrome and Firefox and provides the features I need - and nothing more. 🔨
It's called Z-index after the CSS property, as both of them can be used to put things on top of other things. 🤪
There are a few other apps out there trying to solve this problem. Unfortunately, they don't work as I want/need them. 💔
Helium: it's basically a lightweight browser window. I have to copy paste URLs from Chrome to helium + login to sites like Netflix for members-only content. Frustrating...
Fenêtre: better than Helium but it's still a mini browser and it's hard to play videos using it. Has a browser extension but I was unable to figure out how to use it. Badly documented.
Safari's picture-in-picture: to use it, you need to use Safari on Mac, and it doesn't supports premium features like see-through or click-through. 🦓 🦁 🐯 🐘
"I'll open a popup with the video kind of browser extensions": Doesn't work.
The Z-index way...
❌ It's not a lightweight browser
✔️ It's an always-on-top video player for the web
Z-index takes over the playback when the video isn't visible in the browser
The video will always stay on top of other apps
The video becomes transparent around the mouse cursor to see what's behind
Mouse clicks are passed to the app behind the video
Uses your log-in sessions from the browser to play members-only videos
The app is still in development and the first release is scheduled for the beginning of June. 🚀
In the pre-order period, you can purchase a lifetime license for just $10 which is -50% off for the lifetime license after the release ($20). 💵
When you pre-order the app, your credit card will be authorized for $10, but not charged until the release date. 🔒
On the release date, your credit card will be charged $10, and you will get a download link alongside with a license key. 🍾
- if you change your mind during the pre-order period, you can request a full refund. 😎
- if you change your mind after the pre-order period, you can still request a refund within 2 weeks after the release, but payment processing fees will be deducted as your card was already charged. 😃
Helium is free, Fenetre is $7.99, why do you charge $10 for the lifetime license in pre-order period and $20 after release?
Building great software as a solo, indie developer is hard work. Maintaining it in the long-term is even harder. I commit to maintaining this project for long-term, not just a couple of months like it happened in many cases with apps released by solo developers. This also means a higher price. 🕒= 💵
The license key is issued per-person, so you can use it on all of your devices and includes access to all further updates and upgrades. 🙍
...and you can share it with your family members too, but psssst... don't tell it to anyone! 👪
...sharing the license key and/or the app with anyone else (other then your family members), in any form: isn't allowed. 🛑
You'll need an account to access this in our app. Please create a password to continue.
Download from the App Store or text yourself a link to the app
Thank you for pre-ordering Z-index and for supporting me, as an indie developer.
Your license key and download link will be sent to your email address on the release date.
Until then DM me on twitter if you have any question, idea or request @sc3wnet.
Good news! Since you already have a Gumroad account, it's also been added to your library.Tweet Share
