Designing & Producing a Product Line

Designing & Producing a Product Line

              May 9, 2013, 6:30-8pm
NEW LOCATION, Financial District Manhattan (address will be emailed when you register).

Are you a designer or design savvy person who constantly has ideas for new products?  Have you thought, "if I could get this made, I know people would buy it"?

Learn how to take your design career to the next level and launch your own product line.

              Topics will include:

              - deciding what product to take the plunge with
              - scoping out the competition and doing your due diligence

              - creating a business plan and setting goals
              - sourcing your product domestically and overseas
              - selling - retail, wholesale, to the trade, licensing and more
              - pricing your product

              - getting press and generating buzz
              - growing your business and adding to your line

Host Jessica Ahnert Davis is founder of Nest Studio and The Eagle's Nest blog.
Jess manages a career as an interior and product designer, and, in her
spare time, raises her infant son Bryan and her nearly-adult husband,
Scott. Honored as one of Boutique Design's 2011 "Up and Coming Interior Designers", she launched her own line of hardware (cabinet handles, knobs and pulls) in 2012, with plans to release more lines in the coming year.

Jess describes herself as a 'design geek' who started young, forcing her
parents to buy home design plan magazines and submitting backyard
landscape designs to Southern Living as a child (to no acclaim). She
graduated from Princeton with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and
received her Master's Degree in Interior Design from The New England
School of Art and Design at Suffolk University, with a stint in-between
as a producer on Bob Vila's "Home Again".  As a member of Wilson Associates'
New York and LA offices for 8 years Jessica focused primarily on
international high-end hospitality projects.  In 2012 she took the leap
and launched her own business, Nest Studio focusing on her hardware
line, blog and unique residential and commercial projects in the New
              York and New Jersey Area.

Having grown up in both Hong Kong and Dallas and subsequently lived in
New Jersey, Boston, Brooklyn and Los Angeles, Jess draws from a wide
range of design inspiration - if something creates drama, adds texture,
feels local, provides quiet sophistication, and occasionally sparkles,
it will likely be dear to her heart.

                      Decorator Showhouses: Behind the Scenes

                      April 16, 2013

NEW LOCATION, Financial District Manhattan (address will be emailed when you register).

Every year many designers apply to designer showhouses with the hopes of participating but only a few are selected. Putting together a showhouse room that stands out requires a lot of thought and effort, and decorating the room is only the beginning. This seminar will give you insight into producing showhouse rooms, what to expect and how to best prepare.

Hosts Brittany Marom and Nicole Villi are the founders of Designer Attaché, a design firm that offers designers nationwide with the services of skilled design assistants on an hourly or per-project basis. They have experience managing showhouse installations, as well as extensive knowledge of showhouse screening processes, expense reporting and management, insurance requirements, vendor promotion and co-marketing, and time management.

There are approximately a million online resources available to help you manage your design business. We’re here to help you cut through the noise and discuss why you should be online, how to communicate effectively online, and what the most effective resources are for your business.

The seminar will help designers navigate the many venues to publish and promote their work online. We will also discuss the benefits of joining professional groups like ASID, IIDA and IFDA.

Hosts, Andrew Margie and Trip Tate are two of three cofounders of Pegu Labs. Their company helps consumers and service professionals find each other online and develop advisory relationships through online
communication on the Pegu platform. Prior to Pegu, both spent several years at Patch.com, an online source for local news with several outlets in Brooklyn, working with small businesses to help them take
control of their online reputations using resources like Patch’s local business directory.
