‘The Horse’ or less commonly known as Equus Ferus belongs to the family Equidae which evolved from a small multi-toed mammal called Eohippus into the current single-toed mammal over the last 50 million years. This nature and evolution of the horse should have been a positive development towards the survival and flourishing of the species but unfortunately, humans exploited it for their own goals. Once human beings came to the realization that horses can be tamed, they started to utilize the physical promise of the horse by manipulating its natural instincts. For a millennia, horses have suffered at the hands of humans cruelly using it as the ‘beast of burden’ on a day-to-day basis, during war and for equestrian sports.

Horses were harnessed by Cavalry Generals in order to hold their heads in a particular position to showcase an impressive look while the horse was frothing at the mouth with pain. The same cruelty is enforced during international jumping shows using chambons that apply pressure at the mouth when the horse raises its head, forcing the horse to stay in a particular position for a very long time.

A true sport victory includes showing one’s own physical ability. Torturing an animal to achieve an abstract goal cannot be considered a sport. While fans of equestrian sports argue that horses love sports, love to run and this is an integral part of their nature, but that’s not the complete truth. Horses are tough beasts that love to run but on their own and not with iron metals placed in their mouths and reins that apply pressure which leads to pain and injury. The truth is, horses are not interested or engaged when they are forced by humans and they only do so due to the fear of intimidation and pain.

Equating equestrian sports lovers with sadists is not a wrong judgment. They are sadists because they drive pleasure by forcing a sentient being to experience torture and pain. For example, ‘Tennessee Walking’ horses are forced to wear weights and stilettos to exaggerate their posture. This is extremely uncomfortable for the animal. If that’s not shocking enough, pasterns and the feet of horses are often damaged on purpose by using blisters or injections to further enhance their posture (though this practice is banned, it is still widely practiced and will continue to be until the ‘sport’ itself is banned). The abuses to horses have reached such a level that injuries and fatalities are common and nobody is held accountable. The International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI) is still struggling to police equestrian sports.

To sum it up, horses are put through a lot of abuse and pain just so humans can have some pleasure. This is something that should not be tolerated. Until this ‘sport’ is banned, stop watching or participating in equestrian sports

Horses are magnificent, graceful and beautiful animals and should be treated with kindness and respect.
