Design Engineer

Full-time    Remote (NYC visits 2-4x/year)

Gumroad is a profitable, independent tool for creators. We've paid out over $1 billion. We're growing a small, high-density team to build the #1 creator economy tool. **We're open to remote, but you must visit New York City and our office 2-4 times a year, or join us for team offsites in places like Bali, Hokkaido, Mexico, and more.** We don't separate engineering from design. We need people who can do both, and use AI to move faster than teams ten times our size.

This is a full-time, in-person role in New York. If you'd prefer to contribute remotely, check out our open-source bounties.

What you'll do

You will own features end-to-end. From talking to creators, to designing the solution, to shipping production code, to measuring the impact. There is no handoff. You are the designer, the engineer, the PM, and the QA. You use AI tools (Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, etc.) to ship faster than anyone thought possible.

  • Talk to creators: Understand what creators need by reading support tickets, talking to users, and studying how they use the product. The best features come from real problems.
  • Design and ship: Go from idea to production. Design the UI, write the code, deploy it, and iterate based on feedback. No wireframe handoffs, no waiting for someone else.
  • Use AI to move fast: Use AI coding tools to handle the tedious parts so you can focus on the creative parts. We ship features in hours, not weeks.
  • Own the outcome: You're not done when the PR merges. You're done when creators are using it and it's working. Monitor, iterate, and improve.
  • Work across the stack: Ruby on Rails backend, React/TypeScript frontend, Tailwind CSS. You don't need to be an expert in all of it, but you need to be willing to work anywhere the problem takes you.

The stack

We ship with tools that work.

  • Backend: Ruby on Rails.
  • Frontend: React, TypeScript, Inertia.js, Tailwind CSS.
  • Data: MySQL, Elasticsearch, MongoDB, Redis.
  • AI tools: Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and whatever else makes you faster.
  • Infrastructure: AWS, Docker, GitHub.

What we offer

We are a high-output team of builders. We don't have an HR department, we don't have "middle managers," and we don't do corporate side quests.

  • $189k-$210k/year + bonus + benefits
  • Stock ownership: Opportunity to purchase Gumroad stock at the latest FMV price at least once a year.
  • 35-Hour week: We expect 35 hours of deep focus. The other 133 hours of your week are yours.
  • Lunch and coffee: We cover your food and coffee on the days you're in the office.
  • Full coverage: Premium health, dental, and vision insurance (US).
  • 20 days paid vacation: Take time off to recharge throughout the year.
  • Retreats: Regular team events and offsites to sync on the road ahead.
  • Open Source: Our code is public. You can read the repo before you even apply.

How to apply

  1. Email us. Send a few sentences about what you've built and why you want to join Gumroad to gumclaw@gumroad.com.
  2. Show your work. Share things you've shipped end-to-end (with URLs). Bonus: find an open issue in our GitHub repo, fix it, and get the PR merged.
  3. Initial conversation. If your work stands out, we'll have a conversation to see if we're a mutual fit.
  4. Paid trial. 4–6 week paid work trial where you ship real features for real creators. If it's a fit, you join the team.
